Fillers are hyaluronic acid which is a substance that occur naturally in connective tissues, including the skin. It attracts and retains water to form a supporting base on which other structural fibres develop. The collective effect is the creation of underlying volume, lending firmness and elasticity to the skin.
As we age, levels of this substance naturally decline, and our skin becomes dry and loses elasticity. Meanwhile, loss of fat under the skin and a reduction in bone density in turn cause skin to sag. Wrinkles start to appear thanks to repeated muscle movement and folds arise from loss of volume.
Dermal fillers are injectable gels that restore volume to areas of the face.
Dermal fillers come in a range of different consistencies, from very light and soft for fine lines and wrinkles to more denser types that are used in deeper folds and used to restore volume to the midface or even create a sharper jawline.
Dermal fillers produce instant results, but full effect can take up to one month to show.
Dermal fillers usually last from 9 to 24 months, depending on the product used and the area where the filler is placed.
Fillers can be used for:
To smooth out vertical lip lines and crow’s feet (anti-wrinkle injections can also be used here)
To fill in naso-labial folds and ‘marionette’ lines
To correct sunken and dark tear troughs
Fill temple hollowing
Add volume to provide lift to your cheeks
To create as sharp jawline and chin
My favourite – add subtle volume to add more fullness and definition to your lips
One week prior to your dermal filler injection, you should avoid using alcohol, garlic, lidocaine and aspirin, or any other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as diclofenac, mefenamic acid or ibuprofen. Following these instructions will reduce the risk of bruising or bleeding at the point of injection.
For the first 24 hours following your treatment, you should avoid strenuous exercise, excessive sun or heat exposure, and alcoholic beverages in order to help minimise the risk of temporary redness, swelling and/or itching.
No treatment can halt the ageing process; you will require top-ups if you want to maintain the effect.
